Asics Collectors Guide
The variety of sneaker brands has grown over heavily the last years, new brands enter the market while most mainstream brands now offer “exclusive” releases to attract the attention of sneaker heads. One of the brands that has tapped into this segment successfully is Asics. The Gel Lyte III was received very well and still is a staple in the brands offering. Today we talk with the founder of the website that sheds light into the rich history of the brand. The Asics Collectors Guide aimes to inform sneakerheads by archiving releases from days when stacking boxes was a bit less obvious than it is today.
Pyrophilly: Introduce yourself
Peel: My name is Peel and I’m from Poland. I’m a sound engineer by profession and Asics collector.
Pyrophilly: Where does the Asics love come from?
Peel: I’ve always been a big fan of Japanese culture, the art, the design. I’ve even started to learn Japanese a few years back. One time when visiting Tokyo, Shibuya I stumbled upon these supercool Asics sneakers, I’m hooked ever since.
Pyrophilly: Do you remember the model name?
Peel: It was the Gel Saga in that supercool black/white/purple CW. Magic!
Pyrophilly: So what is the Asics Collectors Guide?
Peel: It’s a place on the web place I decided to bring to life. For now it’s only a small blog where I, with help of other people, try to build a knowledge database about vintage Asics sneakers. It’s also a place where everyone can share his pair of vintage kicks with info about the shoe, you know, name and year and such. I’ve decided to put it up after trying to figure out the name and origin of a vintage pair I got from a flea market.
Pyrophilly: When did you start it?
Peel: About 4 months ago, June 2010. It was more like an impulse than a planned concept. I took a pic, shared it somewhere on a WDYWT section of a forum and figured that most of people didn’t know anything about the model.
Pyrophilly: So whats the goal of ACG? What do you want to achive with it?
Peel: Hopefully one day the ACG makes searching for vintage Asics info easier. Most people don’t even know Asics had so many great models in the past, the sooner this changes the better.
Pyrophilly: What are the future plans for the site?
Peel: It all started as an impulse and I put it up in like half an hour. Now I guess is time to move on, do a proper design and adding a wiki. Make it work like it should from the very beginning. I hope there will be people participating in it. Sharing their kicks and stories.
Pyrophilly: So how can people get involved?
Peel: Enthusiasts can submit their photo’s, stories & model info by clicking on the “Submit kicks” button. Easy as an be!
Pyrophilly: Thank you for your time Peel, good luck with the site. Anything left to say?
Peel: Yes, checkout acollectorsguide.com!
