Urbanears Plattan
Here’s my replacement for Apple’s in-ear headphones. Urbanears is a Scandinavian company making headphones only. The catalogue consists of three types of headphones, all available in a lot of colors. My headphone of choice was the “Plattan” model in grey.
Design
The look and feel of these are awesome, the headphone is covered all over with the color of you’re choice. The earparts are come in a matt plastic-like material with a rubbery feel. Also the cord comes in a color to match, and is made from fabric, giving it a better look & feel than the average plastic cords. The Plattan is collapsable and therefor perfect when you travel a lot. The earparts fit on your ear, as the headphone is pretty tight, wearing it for a long time straight might hurt the ears a little. Overall it seems like a very well made product with great materials and details.
Features
As mentioned before the headphone is collapsable, theres not too many headphones that offer this functionality. In the cord is a little microphone enabling you to handle incoming phone calls when listening music. The single button remote in the cord does multiple things. Use it to pickup and end phone calls, start and end the music player and navigate to the next or previous song. The last mentioned is a nice extra over the default iPhone headphones. The only disadvantage is that you cant regulate the volume in the cord. One of the greatest features is the so called “zound plug” on one of the earcaps. This will allow a friend to listen along, by plugging in their own headphone, how nice is that?
Sound
The part where this Plattan doesn’t score high is the sound. You dont have to be an audiophile to notice the sound is very heavy on bass, producing a bit of a ‘muddy’ sound. Luckily I mostly listen to music which can use a good amount of bass…
Conclusion
The Urbanears Plattan is an incredible sexy looking headphone, nicely designed with a lot of eye for detail. It has lots of great features like the mic & remote in the cord, the zound plug and the collapsable ear parts. Every Plattan comes with a set of adapters to make sure your can use it with on your phone, I use it for my iPhone, but your HTC, BlackBerry or Nokia will be compatible too. The sound is the biggest downside of the product, too much bass and a muddy sound. The fit a personal thing, I like it, but I can imagine people finding it too tight on the ears.
